Third Party Mail Hosting
In order for email to be directed to a third party mail server, the domain name needs to have specific settings that point the Email portion of the domain traffic to the alternative third party server while pointing the website records to the website. If you want to utilize this sort of customized setup you may do so from your Domain Registrar account. This is an advanced technique performed at your own risk. You may want to ask your domain registrar for help (we can also help at our normal consultation rates). See the following options:
- Option #1: Point the full domain to our server, and then just point the MX records to the third party mail server. Consult with your third party mail server to know which DNS records to change, and what those settings should be.
- Option #2: If you are keeping your email at it's current location, you may just want to keep the current default DNS setup and only point the website related records to your new server at gutensite. Edit your DNS records to utilize the following setup as a guide for the minimum required records. Be sure to replace mydomain.com with your own actual domain:
Record Type: A Domain Name: mydomain.com IP Address: 204.11.244.154
Record Type: CNAME Domain Name: www.mydomain.com Canonical Name: mydomain.com
NOTE: The A record will not have a subdomain, and will point directly to the IP address for your Gutensite hosting account on our server. This is the basic IP address most people will share, but if you have a unique IP address (e.g. for your own SSL certificate) you will use that unique IP. The CNAME record will have the "www" subdomain before your regular domain. This essentially means any traffic to mydomain.com or www.domain.com will end up at your new site on the Gutensite server. Everything else will be handled in some other way.
